Shocking Facts

Greenhouse gases make the Earth hot. The on-going process of industrialization over the past 200 years has produced enormous greenhouse gases, mainly CO2, that invite the global temperature rise and climate change. They’ve led to serious consequences, such as the increase in forest fires, the melting of glaciers, and the loss of biodiversity.

Green Building

As the first science & technology museum in China with a Certificate of Green Building Label (Three Stars), we use 10 energy-saving technologies and are one of the models that demonstrate Hangzhou’s efforts to create a low-carbon city.

Kids’ World

It is divided into five zones, each named Discovery Base, Jungle Ventures, Countryside Ventures, Water Fun and Low Carbon Lab. You will get basic knowledge on environment, mechanics, optics, biology, etc. It helps enhance one’s insight, imagination, and creativity.

Low-Carbon Laboratory

Garbage is a misplaced resource. The recycling and reuse of garbage in daily life will help children develop environmental awareness and habits.

Finding Fireflies

People developed the biomimetic technology for fluorescent displays to mimic fireflies. The touch-and-see game will show you the principle of fluorescence emitted by fireflies, and how the mother nature inspires the biomimetics in so many ways.

Water Fun

Playing with a riot of mechanical devices (e.g., water without source, pressure pump, centrifugal pump, Archimedes screw pump, pressure water gun, and dancing water flow) will also be a journey to hands-on knowledge, such as hydraulic force, kinetic energy, potential energy, fluid mechanics, sound/light/electrical control, and mechanical transmission, etc.

Food Chain in Forests

The food chain that involves flora and fauna matters for a low-carbon environment. If one link disappears, it will affect the survival of all species in the entire food chain, and even ultimately the Earth’s environment and mankind’s living space. The game is fun but instructive.

Colored Shadows

Shadows are created because the light travels in a straight line. Due to the different angles of red, green, and blue lighting, one or two colors might be blocked in some positions. That is how colored shadows are created. Most colors in nature can be mixed using red, green, and blue in different proportions. Stand in different positions, and try to create as many colored shadows as possible.

Shiny Round Holes

Light is a substance that exists in the form of electromagnetic waves, and visible light is the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that can be perceived by our eyes. We sense different colors when seeing light with different wavelengths. Insert the transparent plexiglass sticks into the small round holes in the wall and find light in different colors. When the holes are filled with sticks, the wall is densely colored. You can also use sticks to create pictures.

CO₂ Trivia

This 1,600-m2 hall uses 4D multimedia technology to present a stark contrast between beautiful nature and the consequences caused by global warming. You will be on a ride by bamboo raft to journey through six stops, i.e., Xixi Wetland in Spring, Sprawling City, Melting Glaciers, Burning Earth, Extreme Weathers, and Xixi Wetland in Autumn.

Carbon Cycle Hall

It has four parts, i.e., Carbon in the Earth, Carbon Cycle in Nature,Utilization of Carbon, and Impacts of Human Activities on the Carbon Cycle.

Buckytube

Buckytube, also known as carbon nanotube, features high axial strength and stiffness. Theoretically, its strength is 100 times that of steel, while its density is only 1/6 of steel. It is also very flexible and is called super fiber. Therefore, it is often used as a reinforcement for composite materials.

Fullerene

Fullerene, an allotrope of carbon, is a hollow molecule composed entirely of carbons in the shape of a sphere, ellipsoid, column, or tube. Its structure is similar to that of graphite, but graphite has only six-membered rings, while fullerene might have five-membered rings. Fullerene is also known as Buckyball. Discovered in 1985, it is the fourth crystalline form of carbon, following diamond, graphite, and linear carbon. It is harder than diamond, more conductive than copper, and 100 times tougher than steel.

Carbon-Containing Minerals

Carbon is a common element that is widely found in the atmosphere and crust in many forms. It has long been recognized and utilized, and a series of carbon compounds and organic matters are the foundation of life. Carbon is an element in pig iron, wrought iron, and steel.

Diamond

Diamond is the hardest known substance in the world and has the strongest carbon structure. The carbon atoms are arranged in the form of a crystal structure. Each carbon atom is tightly combined with another four to form a spatial network, which finally forms a solid with high hardness and poor activity. Diamond’s melting point is above 3,500℃, equivalent to the surface temperature of some stars.

Exploitation of Onshore Oil

The pumping unit is one of the most important pieces of equipment in oil extraction, commonly known as the “kowtow machine.” It lifts the crude oil at the bottom of the well to the surface with suction rods and pumps. The scene of onshore oil exploitation will help you understand the principle of pumping units.

Doctor’s Study

As a one-dimensional nanomaterial, carbon nanotube is lightweight and has perfect hexagonal structures. It boasts many exceptional mechanical, electrical, and chemical properties. In this small hexagonal theater, you will learn about the structural properties and applications of carbon nanotubes from a “doctor.”

Coal Mining

Coal is known as “black gold” or “food for industry”, and it has been one of the main sources of energy since the 18th century. You can play with the simulated equipment and learn more about the coal mining technologies.

Clever Use of CO₂

CO₂ is an indispensable raw material for plants’ photosynthesis. Within a certain range, the higher the CO₂ concentration, the stronger the photosynthesis; hence, it is the best gaseous fertilizer. In this simulated plant room, when the number of visitors is higher, the CO₂ concentration will be on the rise, and the plants on the wall will be lusher.

Calorific Value

A caloric value is the heat produced by the complete combustion of one kilo of a solid fuel or one cubic meter of a gaseous fuel. It reflects the combustion characteristics of fuels, that is, the ability of different fuels to convert chemical energy into internal energy during the combustion process.

The Impact of Human Activities on the Carbon Cycle

The mirror-decorated corridor is divided into three parts: Population Growth, Deforestation, and Fossil Energy Exploitation. You may learn from pictures along the wall.

Biodegraded Substances

Biodegradation generally refers to the decomposition of microorganisms, which may be aerobic or anaerobic respiration. The ease of biodegradation of organic compounds depends primarily on the characteristics of the organism itself but also on the structural characteristics of organic matters. Organic matters in a simple structure are generally degraded first, and those in a complex structure are degraded later. Substances decomposed by microorganisms in nature will not have a negative impact on the environment.

Graphite

Graphite is a dark gray, metallic, opaque, fine-scale-shaped solid. It is soft, slippery, and has excellent electrical conductivity. The carbon atoms in graphite are bound together in a planar layered structure, and the bonds between the layers are relatively weak, so the layers are easily separated by sliding. Graphite is often used to make pencils, electrodes, tram cables, etc.

During the long history of the Earth’s evolution, there were some special periods (e.g., the Paleozoic and Mesozoic Eras) when, after the deaths of many plants and animals, the organic matters that make up their bodies continued to decompose, mixing with sediment or carbonate sediments and other substances to form sedimentary layers. As the sediments accumulate and thicken, the temperature and pressure rise, and the sedimentary layers become sedimentary rocks and later sedimentary basins, which provide the basic geological environment for the creation of petroleum.

Urban Forest and Wetland Carbon Sink

A forest carbon sink occurs when plants absorb CO2 and fix it in vegetation or soil, thereby reducing the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. Wetland is known as “the Earth'’ kidney” and is effective in carbon sinking. The gallery allows you to watch simulated scenes and play with the installations to learn about the role of forests and wetlands in carbon sinks.

Urban Complex

The urban complex basically has all the functions of a modern city, so it is also called a “city within a city.” It has at least three urban functions (e.g., shopping, office, residence, hotel, exhibition, catering, conference, entertainment, and transportation) and establishes an interdependent and mutually beneficial relationship between each function. It is multi-functional and efficient.

Building or Power Station

This low-carbon building model has photovoltaic panels on top, which convert sunlight into electricity to provide an uninterruptible power supply to the building. You will learn about the working principles of solar power and the importance of renewable energy.

Low-Carbon Hangzhou

This is an open-scene theater. On the right side, a huge bamboo forest picture and 10 embedded landscape boxes show you the low-carbon products with Hangzhou characteristics. On the left side, a screen with a scattered perspective effect is used to play animations about Hangzhou, supported by thoughtfully designed lighting, realistic objects, and elegant music. You will find yourself in a scene typical of the wonderful landscapes in the south of the Yangtze River and appreciate the efforts made to build a low-carbon, livable city.

Low-Carbon Building Design

To create low-carbon buildings, people try to use fewer fossil fuels, improve energy efficiency, and cut CO2 emissions throughout the lifecycle of building materials and equipment manufacturing, construction, and operation. Choose new technologies and materials from the touch screen to design a low-carbon building, and you’ll get informed if the building is energy-efficient.

Geothermal City

The huge thermal energy inside the Earth is the main source of energy for volcanoes, hot springs, earthquakes, and crustal movements. It’s also a clean and promising energy for mankind. No. 800001 Public Bicycle

Public bicycle service is one of Hangzhou’s eco-transit initiatives that advocate low-carbon mobility. The No. 800001 bicycle is the first one put into use as the program started in 2008. It was donated by the city government.

Trains’ Carbon Emission

You will play as a driver to drive a train from Shanghai to Hangzhou. Its realistic cockpit model, using multimedia displays, shows idyllic views along the tracks and triggers thoughts about a low-carbon lifestyle.

Rapid and Smart Transit

With the advances of technology and the progress of urbanization, transit is now becoming intelligent, rapid, and low-carbon. You will get educated on rapid bus system, rail transit, green wave, airport, integrated transportation hub, bicycle rental, ETC (electronic toll collection), traffic violation surveillance, road energy saving and noise reduction, water source protection, car plate recognition, car charging station, etc.

Boats’ Carbon Emission

The facility allows you to act as a captain to ride a boat on Qiantang River. The projected information on the screen explains why a low-carbon lifestyle is that important and necessary.

Cars’ Carbon Emission

The facility allows you to act as a driver to ride a car in downtown Hangzhou. Realistic views, high-definition audio, and a four-degree-of-freedom platform will help you acquire more low-carbon knowledge and improve the environmental awareness.

City of Solar Energy

Solar roofs, solar water heaters, solar street lights, etc. are common ways to effectively use solar energy in daily life. Play the games to see how solar energy is used in the city, and you will believe that it is so practical and easy-to-use.

West-East Gas Transmission

West-East Gas Transmission is a significant project of our nation to supply the abundant natural gases from the west to the east. It helps adjust China’s energy structure and industrial structure, drives economies in both east and west, improves people’s livelihoods in the Yangtze River Delta and areas along the pipeline, and helps control air pollution.

Bikes’ Carbon Emission

The facility allows you to ride a bike around the West Lake, either going solo or in pairs. The projected information on the screen explains why a low-carbon lifestyle is that important and necessary.

Low Carbon Technology Hall

It explains technologies that support a low-carbon lifestyle, such as basic science, internet of things, smart grid, optical mechatronics, new energy, etc.

Concave Mirror

The image formed by a concave mirror can be an upright, magnified, virtual one or an upside-down, reduced, real one, depending on the relationship between the object distance (the distance between the object and the vertex of the concave mirror) and the focal length. You can play the game to learn more about this phenomenon.

Light Up the Angel Ring

There is a flexible LED light strip (i.e., an angel ring) above the desk. When you place both hands in the hand-shaped metal pads, the LED will be lit up. The purpose of this game is to show that human body is an electrical conductor.

Wind Power

This is a sand table simulating windmills. Playing with the three rows of wind turbine models, you will understand the principles of wind power generation and that the amount of electricity produced is related to the turbine shape, wind scale, wind direction, etc.

Wave Power

Stir the sea water by controlling the handle, you will be driving the wave power generator called “Anaconda.” The LED ring on the desk will light up to indicate that the Anaconda is generating electricity. You can move the handle at different speeds to see how the brightness of the LED changes, since different wave movements lead to different amounts of power generation.

Tidal Power

Tide is a clean source of energy. The world’s largest power generation project to harness tidal power is in Zhoushan, Zhejiang provicne. With a capacity of 3.4 MW, it is connected to the State Grid, and its continuous operation time and amount of power generation are among the top in the world. This exhibit is a model of the project, and the screen above shows the real-time condition in Zhoushan. The gravitational force causes the ebb and flow of the tide, giving it huge kinetic energy. You can see how the tide drives the shaft to generate electricity. When the tide hits, the turbine starts to run and turn the gears, which drives the engine. The electricity caused by the generator is then sent to the shore via cables, where it is fed into the grid and distributed to lots of users. How big is 3.4 MW? Previously, the world’s most advanced and largest tidal energy project was only 1.2 MW. Therefore, the Zhoushan project marks China’s entry into a new era of tidal energy power generation.

ETC (Electronic Toll Collection)

You will get self-immersed in a driving scene, as the car, lanes, and voice prompts are realistic. You will learn how the core technologies of ETC, such as DSRC (dedicated short-range communication), RFID (radio frequency identification), and non-contact sensing, bring great convenience to our lives.

Space Telemetry

You can see how space remote sensing technology is used for observing and predicting crop yields and environmental problems on various continents. A spherical projection makes the experience fun and interactive.

Solar Tower

You can press buttons and see how solar mirrors (heliostats) change angles according to the Sun’s position, concentrate the sunlight reflection on the receiver at the top of the tower (the concentrating rate on the receiver can exceed 1,000 times), convert the solar energy into thermal energy, go through a series of conversion processes, and finally supply electrical energy. This kind of solar power is common in northwestern China.

Disappearing Figures

A semi-reflective & semi-transmissive glass has equal reflectivity and transmissivity to light, so that the reflection image of the object in front of the glass and the projection image of the object behind the glass can both be seen. It is a modern grid with highly integrated electricity flow, information flow, and business flow.

Eco-friendly materials are increasingly popular in building construction and home design. You can design a home by touching the hand-shaped sensors in each module. The screen will show you how low-carbon the home is.

Carbon Footprint of Cattle and Sheep

The carbon footprint of cattle and sheep refers to the greenhouse gas emissions caused by raising cattle and sheep. It’s not just human activities that emit CO2 and create a carbon footprint. In fact, methane, which is produced by cattle and sheep around the world, is also an important source of greenhouse gases. When you touch the mouths of the cattle and sheep, you will hear the sound, which is a simulation of the CO2 emissions when animals breathe. A 4-meter-tall cow model shows you the whole digesting process, from eating grass to releasing methane. Ruminants, such as cattle and sheep, produce methane because the lignin in the forage cells can only be digested with the help of bacteria in the stomach, and unfortunately, the by-product of this process is methane. Methane can exist in the atmosphere for 9 to 15 years, which is 21 times the greenhouse effect of the same amount of CO2. In recent years, the excessive demand for meat has led to a surge in the quantity of cattle and sheep, which has posed a great threat to the global environment. We need to reduce methane emissions through scientific farming, and we must save food and reduce food waste.

Excessive emissions of greenhouse gases have attracted the attention of mankind, and people are seeking solutions. You can learn about the influential climate change conferences in recent years and some of the agreements they have made. It helps enhance people’s awareness of climate change.

My Carbon Footprint

A carbon footprint is a measure of the amount of CO2 emissions directly or indirectly caused by an individual, organization, product, or country over a certain period of time. Whether you are eating, working, or sleeping, you are generating carbon emissions and a carbon footprint. You can answer questions on the screen by stepping on a dance mat to learn about their carbon consumption.

Tree Planting

Trees are our friends, as they absorb CO₂ from the air. You can stand in front of the screen, read information about behaviors and amounts of carbon emissions, choose the size of the tree (big or small) and the quantity of the tree (how many big or small trees to be planted), and step on the floor stickers (big or small trees) to “offset” CO₂.

Low-Carbon Wisdom in Ancient China——Karez

Karez was called the “well channel” in ancient times. It is an irrigation system formed by a clever combination of vertical wells and horizontal channels. It is mostly found in Turpan and Hami, Xinjiang province. Such an underground structure not only prevents wind and sand intrusion but also reduces evaporation losses.

Low-Carbon Wisdom in Ancient China——Salt Making

During the Qingli and Huangyou Periods of the Northern Song Dynasty in the 11th century, small-diameter deep wells (aka “Zhuotong Wells”) appeared in the salt-making area in present-day Wutongqiao and Zigong, Sichuan province. This technology is a living fossil of salt-making, hailed as the fifth great invention of ancient China. The tall structure is typical low-carbon equipment, as it uses wind and sunlight to evaporate the water in the brine to concentrate the brine, save fuel, and improve the salt quality.

Low-Carbon Wisdom in Ancient China——Mulberry-Fish Pond

Mulberry-fish pond is a traditional Chinese farming method that combines mulberry planting, sericulture, and fish farming.
